about

“Would you give a stranger the time of day, for something old said in a new way?”
Melbourne folk singer-songwriter Katankin’s new single “In a new way”, the first off her upcoming debut album, humbly asks this question, in an upbeat and joyful celebration of finding one’s own voice. A newcomer on the Australian folk scene, Katankin has nevertheless already begun making her mark, with her 2022 self-produced debut EP "The quiet shimmer of the world" garnering a Music Victoria nomination for Best Folk Work last year, alongside several well-established acts.

“In a new way” is similarly self-produced by the artist, but in contrast to her solo EP, features a full band for much more high-energy affair. Several infectious and uplifting hooks plus Katankin’s signature wit and uniquely lyrical voice are beautifully accompanied by the skilful playing of jazz luminaries Philip Rex on double bass, and Felix Bloxsom on drums and percussion, with Esther Henderson’s warm viola sound underpinning the entire track. Fans of Katankin’s EP may recognise the appearance of a bluebird in sections - a nod to the subject of her 2022 single, and a great example of the artist’s whistling chops.

“In a new way” is out March 11th, with Katankin’s full debut album slated for release later in the year.

lyrics

IN A NEW WAY
Where it ends is where it starts
All of us one and a part
This is where I reside
A line between the lines
And now it's all been said and done
I know I'm not the one
To change your ways or change your mind
And I know you've heard it all before a million times
But I've still got something to say

I got something new to say
Something new to say
Or something old to say in a new way
Yeah I got somethin to say
Would you give a stranger the time of day
For something old said in a new way, in a new way, in a new way

I took you down and built a pyre
I warmed you by my fire
And this is where you’ll remain
Carried in my name
Though it’s all been said and done
And I know I’m not the one to change your ways or change your mind
And I know we’ve heard it all before a million times
But still I got somethin to say

I got something new to say
Something new to say
Or something old to say in a new way
I got somethin to say
Would you give a stranger the time of day
For something old said in a new way, in a new way, in a new way

You said it never could be done
For I was not the one
I took your hand and made you the leader
But you were as lost as me
So let’s go down and build a pyre
I’ll warm you by my fire
But this is where you’ll remain
Cos I’ve still got somethin to say

I got something new to say
Something new to say
Or something old to say in a new way
I got somethin to say
Would you give a stranger the time of day
For something old said in a new way, in a new way, in a new way
